Easter Eggers are a fascinating, diverse, and relatively “new” breed, originally developed by crossing an Araucana with a brown egg layer. Most Easter Egger chicks carry the blue egg gene, and typically feature muffs, beards, a pea comb, and often slate blue or greenish-grey legs.

Because Easter Eggers are a mixed breed, they benefit from hybrid vigor—a genetic advantage resulting from their diverse ancestry. This means the chicks are generally strong, healthy, and resilient. Their varied gene pool also leads to a wide range of plumage colours and feather patterns, making them both functional and ornamental.

Greenhills Country Farm currently supplies Blue/Slate, Black, Splashed, and Red Easter Eggers, from which customers can expect a lovely variety of egg colours—including shades of grey, green, blue, and even tan.

The name Easter Egger comes from their decorative and varied egg colours, reminiscent of the painted eggs traditionally used in Easter egg hunts in the Northern Hemisphere—before chocolate eggs became the standard. While these birds can lay many different colours, each hen will only lay one egg colour for life. For example, if a pullet starts with green eggs, she will never lay blue or pink eggs later.

Easter Eggers typically lay 240–260 eggs per year, making them reliable layers. They are also known for being quiet and docile, ideal for backyard flocks. While rare, a more assertive hen may appear occasionally, but this is not typical of the breed.

With their unique egg colours, beautiful plumage, and gentle temperament, there are plenty of reasons to consider adding Easter Eggers to your flock.
