Barneveld, a town in the Netherlands, is home to a large agricultural college specializing in poultry. As such, the area became a hub of the poultry industry in the early twentieth century. Barneveld was known for supplying eggs across Europe, and the egg market was thriving. At the time, England preferred brown-shelled eggs, so it became necessary to breed a bird capable of laying dark brown eggs to meet that demand.
Barnevelders were once known to lay eggs as dark as those of the Marans. However, as breeders focused their efforts on perfecting the striking double-laced plumage, the rich chocolate egg colour faded over time—today, Barnevelder eggs are typically dark brown to light brown.
Modern Barnevelder hens are admired for their distinctive feather patterning—a rich brown feather with double black lacing, creating an elegant ‘arrowhead’ appearance. The neck feathers remain black with no lacing.
Physically, the Barnevelder has a rectangular body shape, compact with a U-shaped back. The wings sit high on the body, limiting flight ability. The neck has a slight arch, and the tail is carried at a perky 50-degree angle with a moderate feather spread. Plumage is tight and neat. The single comb has five points, and the comb, wattles, and earlobes are all red. Eyes are red bay in colour, and the beak is horn-coloured. Skin and legs are yellow, with four toes per foot. Hens are not particularly known for broodiness.
Greenhills Country Farm currently supplies the Double Gold Laced Barnevelder, a beautiful and hardy variety ideal for both egg production and ornamental purposes.
