Originating in Rhode Island and Massachusetts in the 1840s, the Rhode Island Red is one of the most iconic and widely recognized chicken breeds in the world. Developed through a cross between Malay and Brown Leghorn chickens, the Rhode Island Red is renowned for being a hardy, reliable layer with a friendly temperament. It is a low-maintenance, dual-purpose breed, ideal for both egg production and meat.

Rhode Island Red hens typically begin laying at around 6 months old and may occasionally go broody, often making excellent mothers. A healthy hen can lay up to 280 light brown eggs per year, making them a great choice for backyard flocks or small farms.

They are easily identified by their striking mahogany red feathers, yellow legs, and red comb and wattles. The breed standard calls for a brick-shaped body, reflecting their strong and sturdy build.

Rhode Island Reds are slightly more dominant within a mixed flock, often rising higher in the pecking order, but they are generally docile and friendly with people. While roosters can occasionally show aggressive tendencies, the hens remain gentle, calm, and even broody hens tend to be relaxed in nature. They will also happily sit on eggs from other birds.

As active foragers, Rhode Islands thrive when allowed to free range, and it’s not uncommon to see roosters calling their hens over when they discover food. Despite this, they also tolerate confinement well, making them a versatile option for various farm or backyard setups.
