Point of Lay Chickens

We rear our won pullets from day-old chicks to point of lay.Rearing of pullets occurs over 17 weeks (some four months).We believe that good management during the rearing period can assure that the point of lay subsequently reaches the laying house in optimal condition to successfully deliver eggs. Since 2013 Rossouw Poultry is producing their own point-of-lay pullets, production is enough that no pullets are  bought in. Approximately 30% of our point-of-lay hens are sold to external customers. Amberlink and Hy-line are the two breeds that are used which gives satisfactory results. Both cage and floor rearing are used, where cage rearing is suitable for commercial layer production systems and floor rearing suits the free-range market better.

Rossouw Poultry has a high welfare standard where we follow the Five Freedoms of animal welfare as outlined by the World Organisation of Animal Health. The SAPA standards are also used to ensure optimal [production. The Rearing Unit prides itself by having close collaboration between our consulting Veterinarian, Production Manager, Farm Manager and Nutritionist.

Lohmann / Hyline Hens – Egg-Ready Chickens Point off Lay Chickens

The Lohmann and Hyline layers are known for their excellent egg laying abilities.The Lohmann and Hyline hens are both from hybrid origin and were selectively bred from a variety of breeds.

They lay between the age of 20-24 weeks but can start from as early as 18 weeks, laying on average 1 egg per day and up to 320 brown eggs per year. Eggs are normally laid in the morning. They are also a very inquisitive breed and are great to have around children, quickly becoming tame and friendly. Point off Lay Chickens

We sell our hens at 6 weeks or 12 weeks old. This allows them to be young enough to become very tame around young children. Selling hens at this age also has the benefit of the hens being used to their environment before egg production starts. This normally helps the hens to lay at a slightly

younger age.

With hybrid layers their feed consumption in lower compared to pure breed birds, therefore they are more profitable when it comes to egg production.
